The magic and traditions of dance
The Old Tango World Championships is an event that will be held for the first time in 2025, where Old Tango enthusiasts will gather to compete for the championship of this traditional tango. The event is a unique combination of history, culture and artistic expression that attracts both participants and spectators to enjoy the magic of tango.
History and meaning of tango
Tango originated in the late 19th century in Argentina and Uruguay, especially in the port cities of Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Originally, it was a subcultural dance that combined African, European and indigenous influences. Tango quickly spread to become a global phenomenon and achieved great popularity, especially in the early 20th century, and Tango was first performed in Finland on November 2, 1913
Old Tango, or traditional tango
is distinguished from modern tango by its stylistic authenticity and adherence to the original step patterns and music. Old Tango competitions particularly value the dancers’ ability to interpret the rhythm and mood of the music, as well as their skill in preserving the original spirit and elegance of tango. The tango waltz is danced with the steps and patterns of Old Tango, adapting the steps to the rhythm of the waltz music.
Organizing the competitions
The Old Tango World Championships are organized by the national association Tanssikansa ry and are held on the historically significant Hammaslahti ”Love Stage,” which adds to the dignity and atmosphere of the event. The competitions are open to all Old Tango enthusiasts in three different categories: general competition class, senior class and amateur class.
The aim and purpose of the competition is to preserve the original dance style of Old Tango and Tango Waltz as authentically as possible, and all interpretive elements of the music should be performed in the Old Tango style.
Qualifications and finals
The competitions first consist of danced qualifying rounds, in which the dancers demonstrate their skills in front of a jury. The best couples advance to the finals, where they compete for the world championship. The jury consists of tango experts and respected dancers who carefully evaluate the couples’ performances
